Statement of the Peace Movement on the occasion of May 1st

On the occasion of May 1st: International Workers’ Rights Day, the Peace Movement calls for participation in gatherings throughout France for peace, social justice and the realization of all human rights.

The Peace Movement has often pointed out that the preamble of the founding charter of the ILO (International Labour Organization) stated in 1919 that “A universal and lasting peace is only possible on the basis of social justice”. With the aggression of Russia against Ukraine, the 1st of May 2022 requires to affirm with force the convergence between the struggles of the workers for their rights and the struggle for Peace.

This is why the Peace Movement highlights the importance of the common declarations of the main trade union organizations in several departments of France, which, like those of the Île-de-France region, have “reaffirmed their resolute opposition to all forms of war, for which they observe that it is always the workers who pay the highest price. Yesterday in Iraq, in Libya, in Mali, in Syria, but also in Yemen, in Ethiopia… as today with the dramatic aggression in Ukraine. Whatever the color of the planes and tanks, they shoot at innocent populations, at children and workers. Refugees, wherever they come from, must be welcomed with dignity and without discrimination. The Russian and Belarusian citizens who express their opposition to the war must be supported. Our trade unions demand an immediate halt to the fighting and the immediate removal of Russian troops from Ukrainian ground. They express their solidarity with the peoples who are suffering the consequences.”

Fortunately, people all over the world are acting in various ways, even where it is most difficult, to demand the realization of their aspirations through the construction of a world of justice and peace. The human, technological, scientific and financial means exist. For this it is absolutely necessary to drastically reduce world military expenditure which, for the first time in the history of humanity, in 2021 reach 2113 billion dollars – 1966 billion euros (source SIPRI).

This is why the Peace Movement is calling all over France to join the May Day protests organized by the unions to say stop to all wars, to all violence and to call for action:

▶ For a world of justice and Peace ▶ For solidarity and friendship between peoples, For a world of justice and peace ▶ For solidarity and friendship between peoples, the rejection of racism and xenophobia ▶ For the respect of human rights ▶ For the unconditional and non-discriminatory reception of refugees ▶ To stop the militarization of the world ▶ For a world free of nuclear weapons ▶ For the resolution of conflicts within the framework of the United Nations For a world free of nuclear weapons ▶ For conflict resolution within the framework of the United Nations ▶ For gender equality ▶ For a media free of the stranglehold of multinational corporations and the military-industrial complex lobbies ▶ For climate justice ▶ For a culture of peace and non-violence.

For the future of humanity, there is no other way than peace.

On May 1st let us participate in the gatherings organized by the trade unions.
