50 years after the entry into force of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty – The urgency is to ratify the Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the entry into force of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty NPT (March 5, 1970), Le Mouvement de la Paix welcomes the fact that in application of the NPT and its article 6, a Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) was adopted at the UN on July 7, 2017, then signed by 81 States and to date ratified by 35 States.

Knowing that this treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons will come into force after its ratification by 50 states, Le Mouvementde la Paixcalls on France and all the states of the world to sign, ratify and apply the Treaty on the Prohibitionof nuclear weapons. This treaty will make it possible to enter a phase of concretization of a general, progressive and controlled nuclear disarmament as in article 6 of the NPT which entered into force 50 years ago.

With activists from around the world, a hundred French peace activists will participate with Le Mouvement de la Paix, in April and May 2020 to the work of the NPT review conference at the UN in New York and will demonstrate in front of the United Nations to demand that all heads of state ratify the TPNW.

Le Mouvement de la Paix calls on the French men and women, from which 76% are in favor of nuclear disarmament, to multiply the actions for the ratification of the TPNW and to contribute to the success of the International Forum for Peace and Nuclear Disarmament organized in Paris under the aegis of the National Collective on Peace March Saturday April 4, 2020 at 5 p.m. at the House of Trade Unions.
