In the context of the PCF-PLO conference on 4 June 2025, the Peace Movement reiterates its demand to the President of the French Republic that France immediately recognise the State of Palestine alongside Israel.
Following his diplomatic visit to Egypt in early April 2025, the President of the French Republic said he was ready to recognise the existence of a Palestinian state in June 2025. The Peace Movement can only welcome this statement. Recognising the State of Palestine alongside Israel is a necessary and urgent step on the path to building a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
Today, the situation facing Palestinians, particularly in Gaza, is absolutely terrifying. With each passing day, the genocidal process continues. Hundreds of people are being killed by Israeli bombings that primarily target civilian populations. Netanyahu and the State of Israel are trampling on all the basic rules of international law, including by preventing the delivery of humanitarian and food aid to Gaza for months. By continuing down this path, Israel, with the support of the US, is contributing to perpetuating the cycle of violence indefinitely. For the safety of Palestinians and Israelis, we must return to international law. This is the only way to stop the carnage and the ongoing deportation of tens of thousands of Palestinians.
In just a few months, the Peace Movement collected more than 10,000 signatures, including 7,000 on its website, calling for the recognition of a State of Palestine on the basis of the following text: “The establishment of a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians requires respect for the rights of Palestinians as recognised by numerous United Nations resolutions, i.e. through the implementation of the two-state solution, based on the 1967 borders, existing side by side, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states, as defined by numerous agreements and specified in December 2016 by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334. ………….This is why the Peace Movement is calling for increased solidarity to get the French government to respect the French Parliament’s vote in favour of the immediate recognition of a State of Palestine. This respect is all the more necessary given that it was achieved in December 2014, in the National Assembly and then in the Senate, by a vote of parliamentarians of all political persuasions. Such a decision would constitute a historic contribution by France to the construction of peace in the Near and Middle East.
The Peace Movement has been fighting for this recognition for years. It has developed active solidarity with the PLO and the Palestinian people, notably through delegations to Palestine as part of rallies for non-violent popular resistance in Bil’in, but also by meeting Yasser Arafat in 2003 in Ramallah and Abed Rabbo in 2025 as part of the Palestinian Authority.
On the occasion of this meeting, the Peace Movement reiterates its support for the Palestinian people in the recognition of their rights. Declarations are no longer enough; action is needed. There is urgency and ground to make up, as the National Assembly voted in favour of recognising the Palestinian state on Tuesday 2 December 2014, with 339 votes in favour and 151 against.
For the Peace Movement, Roland Nivet, national spokesperson for the Peace Movement.
