Nuclear proliferation is seriously menacing peace all over the world. This worrying issue has been largely shared at the UN in New York during the Preparatory Conference for the 2004 NPT Review. From now to 2005, all states must take the most efficient steps to face the risks of nuclear weapons proliferation.

For this very purpose, citizens must put pressure on their governments. In May 2004 a French delegation went to New York to remind the states of their responsibilities and to make precise proposals to engage a true nuclear disarmament campaign.

Promised for 30 years, let's demand it now!

Mouvement de la Paix and the organizations of Abolition 2000 launch a new campaign for nuclear disarmament based on the following common appeal :

Nuclear arms are mass destruction weapons aimed at civilian populations.

Used twice in the history of Mankind, their proliferation increases the danger of renewed use, wilfully or by accident.

To face the danger of this proliferation, the international community thought, as early as 1970, that there was one possibility only: their elimination.

This elimination was planned, not resorting to war, but in the frame of an international treaty, the Non Proliferation Treaty, signed by every country in the world, except India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea, which withdrew in 2003.

However proliferation goes on and its danger has been emphasized again several times lately.

It is thus urgent to enforce the international law and to embark, without further delay, in the elimination of those weapons of mass destruction.

To preserve the future of our planet and of future generations let us

•  demand the immediate enforcement of the NPT and particularly of article VI which includes the elimination of nuclear arms under strict and efficient international control.

•  ask France and the European Union to take major initiatives for the enforcement of the NPT in view of the Review Conference of the NPT which will take place at the UN in New York in May 2005.

Initiative supported by the following movements:

- Action des Citoyens pour le Désarmement Nucléaire
- Appel des Cent pour la Paix
- Artistes pour la Paix
