From April 29 to May 7 : sixty French peace activists will gather at the UN in New York to discuss about nuclear disarmament
The French delegation (which also includes other French peace movements' representatives such as Stop Essais and the Appel des Cent, Mayors for peace, Pax Christi) joins the campaign of re-mobilization of the French public opinion on nuclear disarmament issues; this campaign is supported in France by some fifty associations. This action is undertaken in partnership with NGOs from all over the world.
On 1st May our delegation will attend the big demonstration in Central Park, New York, gathering more than 1000 mayors and more than 1000 NGOs from all over the world to support the Hiroshima Mayor's appeal.
During the Conference discussions will be held by the various countries; our delegation, together with the other NGOs that will be there, wants the peoples' voices to be heard in order to demand the progressive reduction of nuclear armament until the total disappearance of this source of deadly danger and international blackmail for the whole world.
A meeting is scheduled with the ambassadors of the countries officially and non-officially possessing the atomic bomb and those not possessing it in order to confront our positions with those of their countries. These contacts will add to those already had in Geneva last April (see below).
For the record, the NPT came into force in 1970, just 3 countries have not signed it so far (India, Pakistan and Israel; North Korea withdrew in 2003). Since its leading back in 1995, it has been reviewed every five years. The 2005 review is very important because the United States are trying to throw the NPT back under question again. This conference will be an important occasion to examine the results achieved about non-proliferation by Non-Nuclear Weapon States, to analyse the efforts produced about disarmament by Nuclear Weapon States and to counter better the new proliferation risks.
Mouvement de la Paix, by its participation, is willing to push forward constructive propositions through… :
• the FULL SPECTRUM RESISTANCE: an International Space Organizing Conference, on April 30.
• the 1st May big march and rally in Central Park for a nuke-free world and no more excuses to war, organised by Abolition 2000 and United for Peace and Justice.
• the youth rally organised by the Gensuikyo, a Japanese NGO, on May 2
• the NPT Revision working sessions.
• the NGO events inside the UN building, such as the 6 Friday Youth Forum organised by the German NGO PresseHütte.
• the Abolition 2000 General Assembly on May 7.
